Learning websites we love

If you love learning, the internet is your oyster!

Imagine the whole interweb fell carelessly into a black hole in cyberspace, never to be seen again. Which websites would you miss the most?

When it comes to education the internet has become pretty indispensable: teachers use it to find new resources and ideas for lesson plans; parents use it to find ways to help their children learn and young people use it to research homework and play learning games.

If you are reading this blog because you want to help your child(ren) learn, read on – we have put together a list of our favourite websites for young learners, from age 3 to 16: pretty comprehensive!

Pre-school/ Early Years
Using a mouse is great for hand-eye coordination so don’t hesitate to let your little munchkin play around on the computer.  Starfall is a great website for early readers: there are lots of phonics-related activities and they are all very accessible to younger children. We also like Phonics Play, which is suitable for ages 3 and up and has great games to play.

Key Stage 1
Crickweb has a vast range of activities to enhance literacy, numeracy and a few other areas of the Key Stage 1 curriculum.

Key Stage 2
If I’m ever passing Woodlands Junior School in Kent (unlikely, as I live in Manchester), I will take my hat off to their staff: for fun, variety and accessibility their website is hard to beat. Numeracy is here and literacy is here. Enjoy!

Entrance Exams (Year 5)
We have a huge collection of links to support your child’s entrance exam preparation and suggest you look at them all!

To narrow it down for you, though, we suggest the following: for maths Eleven Plus Maths is a very wonderful website which we cannot recommend highly enough. If NVR puzzles have got you in a muddle, Brain Experiment  is fantastic and for Verbal Reasoning, Eleven Plus Exams is ace.

Key Stage 3
If the aforementioned internet apocalypse should ever come to pass, the website we would most miss is the BBC’s, because it is quite comprehensively the best education website by a mile. With clear explanations, engaging activities and focused tasks, this website is truly excellent.  Take a look at Key Stage 3 Bitesize here.

Key Stage 4
Again, the BBC is a wonderful resource. A great revision site for English language and literature is English Biz and for maths, we recommend Revisionworld.

We aim to add to our Useful Links page all the time, so if you have a suggestion for a website that will help young people learn, please send us the link and we’ll add it if we like it.
