Anti-Bullying Week 2020: United Against Bullying

Anti-Bullying Week 2018 will run from 16th – 20th November with the theme of ‘United Against Bullying’.  Run by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, the week aims to show young people that there is strength in numbers. By standing together against bullying, even when we don’t like or agree with those who are being bullied, we can create safe spaces where everyone can play and grow without fear of being picked on.

From wearing odd socks to tweeting about what #AGoodFriendIs, we can all play our part.

For more information about Anti-Bullying Week and how to get involved, visit the Anti-Bullying Alliance website. You may also like to follow the Anti-Bullying Alliance on Twitter, YouTube and on Facebook.

Finally, we all need to play our part in standing against bullying, so why not take a couple of minutes to share their posts on your own social media channels? You never know how much effect you could have on a bullied (or bullying) child.

Lockdown 2: Our Arrangements

Lockdown 2 began today so it’s business as usual for Better Tuition, but onscreen. We have taken our services online for the duration of November and our doors will reopen on 2nd December. Our students will have their usual dynamic, engaging lessons and we will still run our free assessments. Our Entrance Exam Zoom Webinar will still take place on 16th November.

Register for tuition from 2nd December;
Buy a digital masterclass;
Book our Entrance Exam Zoom Webinar

It hasn’t been an easy decision because the government hasn’t insisted on tuition centres closing. Lockdown guidelines state that it is acceptable to leave the house for education. Furthermore, as we are Ofsted-registered, parents can access our tuition as part of their childcare provision.

So we had to weigh up the benefits of continuing to open against the need to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Woman in Pink Shirt Sitting by the Table While Smiling

Firstly, we had to consider whether we could offer a suitable alternative to in-person tuition. This one was a no-brainer. We learned a lot about delivering lessons online during Lockdown 1 and we are really confident that our web-based lessons are of the highest quality. We have developed a huge library of engaging digital resources. We have invested our time and our money to ensure that we can offer an unparalleled service. During Lockdown 1, we taught hundreds and hundreds of lessons online, so we are now adept at delivering digital education.

For all that, though, we know we offer a very safe environment. Children sit apart, facing the wall (it sounds Victorian but it does help them focus on their studies,as well as reducing the transmission of viruses). There are no more than five children per room. Each room is ventilated and benefits from an air purifier. Staff wear face shields and there are contactless hand sanitising stations throughout the building. The children must sanitise their hands before and after each session and we follow stringent cleaning protocols. For example, the toilet is cleaned after every single use (big thank you to our Receptionist/ Digital Resource Manager Emma, who has accepted this variation in her duties forbearingly).

Coronavirus (COVID-19) | Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust

Ultimately, though, we know that although we offer a very safe environment, people still have to leave their house to bring their children to Better Tuition. It’s very difficult to leave the house without encountering other people and we can’t control what happens on the way to our centre. The best way to stop the spread during Lockdown 2 really is to stay at home as much as possible. Education is really important but our students will not miss out. We’ll make sure of that. So we are closing for the protection of our students and their families and all those key workers who are in the frontline.

Covid-19: The UK Government's Communications Own Goal

Yes, we will lose money. We thank our lucky stars that we are able to offer our services online, unlike many other businesses such as hairdressers or beauty salons, but like all small, family businesses, our situation is precarious. Just like you, we don’t know what the future holds or when the pandemic will end.  However, we have had grants from the government. In fact, those grants have come from tax payers: ordinary people just like us who are doing their best to get through this year. We’ve been given these grants so that our business can survive during these tough times. We’re so grateful for the help we’ve been given. We could never repay the money so it’s only right that we use it in the right way: to enable us to close and protect as many people as we can during Lockdown 2. This is not a judgement on other tuition centres or other businesses. Each one has their own set of circumstances. If lockdown is extended after December 2nd, we will evaluate and make a decision based on circumstances at the time.

For now, we would just like to thank our customers for their support this year. We couldn’t carry on without you and we will work so hard to make sure the children don’t lose out. If you need help or support, just ring us straight away on 0161 748 3912. Let’s stop the spread, beat this virus and get on with the rest of our lives.

Half Term Activities October 2020

It’s half term with a difference this time around (the difference being that even the Halloween bats have had their wings clipped!).

The Big Neighbourhood Pumpkin Trail

Two Jack O'lantern Lamps

Artventurers want as many people as possible to display a pumpkin in their window. The idea is that parents can take the kids for a walk around the neighbourhood to see how many pumpkins can be spotted. You can download a pumpkin poster from their website . Artventurers will also be posting craft and art activity ideas on their Facebook page.

Eureka! It’s Time for Science!

Got some felt tips, kitchen rolls and pegs? Then you’re all set to do some science! Join Eureka’s science oracle, Chris, for some creative chromatography. If that’s not your thing, try out some brain training or check out these eye illusions.

Have a Roald Dahl Day

10 things you didn't know about Roald Dahl | BookTrust

A dose of the marvellous medicine that is Roald Dahl is sure to put the fizz whizz into your half term. Start by dressing up as your favourite Roald Dahl character and take a virual tour of the Roald Dahl museum. Next, it’s time for some artistry: watch How to Draw Matilda, or Willy Wonka or create a free account at Twinkl and download some colouring in. For lunch it has to be a revolting recipe or two and after that why not spend time reading your favourite Roald Dahl books together?

It’s good to get out in the fresh air every day, so take the opportunity to scour the park for Marvellous Medicine ingredients? Back home you can stir it all up and bottle it, ready for Grandma’s next visit! After all that activity, you’ll be ready for some downtime: time for a film (our favourite is Matilda) and a snuggly rest on the sofa.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt

Back View Of Woman in Black Witch Costume

If you’re self-isolating, even a trip to the park is out of bounds and in any case, the weather is always unpredictable at this time of year. So if you need to stay in, why not try a Halloween Scavenger Hunt? Kids love dashing around the house following clues and it will help to add excitement to a locked-down Halloween. If you prefer to get out and about, this Neighbourhood Halloween Scavenger Hunt is ideal.

You don’t have to wait for Halloween to do a scavenger hunt; just make your own! Write a list of items and pack the kids off to search around the house. You can also make your scavenger hunt educational, like this one.

Get Totally Gruesome

Family dressed for Halloween

Combine a kids’ version of break-out rooms with The Crystal Maze and you’re some way to understanding what Totally Gruesome is. This socially distanced Halloween attraction at Ashton-Under-Lyme’s Metro Cinema sees kids given five minutes in 10 different themed rooms to try and crack codes and solve puzzles. Themes include the Spiders Cave, Gruesome Dinosaurs and the Clown Graveyard. You’ll get to meet the Wicked Witch and a team photo from the ‘Mirror, Mirror on the Wall’, but you can only book with people inside your bubble. Book here.

So your child has missed their entrance exam due to self-isolating? What now?

Photo of Boy Wearing Face Mask

Trafford’s CEM exams take place today but what if your child is one of the many who are in self-isolation due to coronavirus? After spending (probably) over a year in preparation, taking practice tests and practising non-stop over the past few weeks, a significant number of children have been told to stay at home. The news that the preparation process has been extended yet again is nothing short of devastating for parents and children alike. If you find yourself in this predicament, you are not alone. So what happens now?Photo of Boy Wearing Face Mask

Your child will receive an alternative date on which s/he will sit the entrance exam(s) for the school(s) of their choice. This is likely to be in early November.

The difficulty that many parents face is how to organise their child’s time over the next two to three weeks in order to maximise results, maintain current standards and keep motivation levels high. Here is our ten-point plan to help you do just that.

White Paper With Note

1) Do continue to practise and prepare for entrance exams. You can’t afford to stop completely. It’s hard to enforce this because the children have prepared themselves mentally for the big day and now they have to switch their focus to a date in the future. However, regular practice is necessary for exam success.

2) Let your child see this as an opportunity to gain even more marks in their exam. Acknowledge that this is a difficult time for them, but help them to see the bright side of their extended preparation period.

Photo of Light Bulb

3) Make ‘less is more’ your mantra. You don’t need to spend all day every day on academic pursuits. Ten-minute tests are your friends. Full practice papers should be used very sparingly.

4) Keep three days per week free of entrance exam prep. You can sell it to your child as a three-day weekend. Or let them choose which three days they will have free of prep.

Question Mark Illustration

5) Offer your child a choice of activities. Say, “Would you like to do a comprehension or a ten-minute test?” This will help your child feel more in control and less like things are being foisted on them.

6) About three ten-minute test activities is enough on prep days. If you are doing a practice paper, don’t do anything else that day. Don’t do too many practice papers and if you’re doing the CGP papers, about 55% is a passing score for those.

Orange Cat Sleeping on White Bed

7) Now here’s the tricky bit: it’s really important that you stick to a bedtime routine with a set bedtime each night. It’s so very easy to let these things slide when you are all stuck in the house but the cumulative effects of too many late nights will have an impact on your child’s exam scores.

8) Be as strict as you can about screen time. Too much screen time makes children anxious and fretful and robs them of their ability to concentrate. Don’t beat yourself up about it, though. There probably isn’t a parent in the land who maintained control of screen time during lockdown.

Black and White Picture of a Crying Child

9) If your child has a tantrum about entrance exam preparation, let them get their anger out. This will do them some good. Then leave the preparation for the rest of the day.

10) We know this is really hard for parents. None of us have had an easy time of it. Try to be kind to yourself and don’t run yourself ragged balancing your own work with home schooling and entrance exam preparation.

Practically speaking, if you need tuition, we will try to help if we can. We are pretty full at the moment, but that doesn’t mean we won’t be able to fit you in. Please note we will be closed from 26th October until 2nd November. If your child has a weak spot, now is the time to tackle it with one of our online masterclasses. Masterclasses normally cost £55 but self-isolating students can book them for £40 until the end of October.

You may wish to have your child sit a formal exam at home with our exclusive exam papers and prerecorded invigilation session for £30. You can book them here:

Exam A – Click to book a prerecorded invigilation session. These exam papers were previously used on 5th April.
Exam B – Click to book a prerecorded invigilation session. These exam papers were previously used on 10th May.
Exam C – Click to book a prerecorded invigilation session. These exam papers were previously used in June.
Exam D – Click to book a prerecorded invigilation session. These exam papers were previously used in July.

However you prepare over the next few weeks, we wish you the very best of luck. We know this is a very challenging situation for parents and if we can help, please don’t hesitate to contact Paul Syrett or Christine McLaughlin on 0161 748 3912.

Final Preparations for Trafford’s Grammar School Exams

Final Preparations for Entrance Exams 2020
Brown Hour Glass on Black Textile
It’s been a long road to Trafford’s entrance exams this year but the journey is nearly over. This time next week, thousands of children will travel from all over the north-west to sit the CEM entrance exam at grammar schools in Trafford. Before that, on Friday 16th October, many children will sit exams for Loreto Grammar School and St Ambrose College. The stakes are high. So how can we best support the children over the next few days?

Confidence is key. We must do everything we can to boost the children’s confidence over the next ten days. We can do this by being relentlessly positive about all their hard work.

For example, supposing your child scores 6/10 on a maths test. Point out how impressed you are that they answered a particular question correctly. And do bear in mind that they do not need to score 100% in order to pass the test!

If your child is showing signs of exam fatigue, s/he is not alone by any means. Signs that your child is suffering from exam fatigue include very low scores (compared to previous scores), making lots and lots of ‘silly mistakes’ and throwing tantrums when asked to do exam preparation activities. It may seem counterintuitive but the only way to address this is to give your child a total break. You really will be amazed by the difference this can make. It’s up to you how long the break should be. You might decide to do no exam preparation between now and the big day. Or you may choose just to take a break for two to three days.

If you do decide to take a break, we strongly recommend that you have your child take part in lots of physical activities such as running and playing sport. This literally builds synapses in the brain so you will still be preparing for the exam (just don’t tell them!). Keep an eye on their diet, as I am sure you already do, avoiding processed and sugary foods. Keep screen time low and play board games etc as a way of keeping their strategic brain engaged. We know it can be hard to find time for all this, particularly during the pandemic (we certainly won’t be finding the time to play board games for a couple of weeks!) so please don’t feel that this is a strict set of instructions. These are just suggestions and none of them is essential for exam success.

If your child has to self-isolate

If your child has to self-isolate and therefore cannot sit the exam as scheduled, the school will provide you with an alternative date. You may have to extend entrance exam preparation for three or even four weeks. We recommend that you continue to practise slowly and steadily, giving your child a break for the half term week. After all, this has been a really difficult time for all the children and they deserve their break more than ever.

You might like to purchase a masterclass from us, if there are areas in which your child is weaker. You can read all about our online masterclasses here.

If your child is registered for lessons at Better Tuition, we can offer them online lessons either as part of a group lesson or individually at their usual time. If your child is not registered with us but you would like some lessons, please contact us about this. We will try to fit them in if we can.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their support during this time. We cannot put into words how much we appreciate each and every one of you. We wish your child lots of luck in the exam and we can’t wait to hear their results.

Coronavirus: how we will minimise the risks

We are very happy to have reopened on 19th April. We are working tirelessly to ensure that all government guidelines are followed, not least those relating to cleaning.

Here are a few of the measures we have put in place:

1)
No-touch hand sanitising stations will be placed throughout the centre (one at the front door, one in each classroom and one at reception).
2)
Children and staff will wash their hands on arrival.
3)
All surfaces will be sanitised using anti-bacterial spray. Sanitisation will be frequently repeated. All surfaces will be fully sanitised between lessons.
4)
Toilets will be sanitised before and after each session.
5)
Parents and carers will not come into the centre. Children will be buzzed in at the start of the lesson. We will bring the children out at the end of the lesson. Punctuality is essential.
6)
Payment should be made in cash (sent in with your child) or via bank transfer (or childcare vouchers, if you use these). Your child may pay by contactless bank card if you prefer.
7)
Your child will bring written feedback home after every lesson. You will be welcome to ring us to discuss our feedback further. We are sorry to not be able to talk to you face-to-face and take you through each of the activities, but we must all do what we can to minimise the spread of coronavirus. When the pandemic is over and social distancing has ended, you will be able to come into the centre at the end of the lesson each week and look at all your child’s activities and completed work.
8)
Staff will wear transparent visors:
If the weather is very hot, we may wear masks instead as the visors can be quite warm.
9.
Staff and students will sanitise hands before and after passing worksheets or any other object to each other.
10.
If a child appears unwell or complains of feeling unwell, we will take their temperature with a contactless thermometer and contact you to collect them if necessary.
11.
Classrooms will be well-ventilated, to allow air to circulate. HEPA-filtered air purifiers will also be in use.
12.
We will provide online catch up lessons via Zoom if you need to miss a lesson.
13.
Children should bring their own pen, pencil, rubber and ruler. Don’t worry if you forget them; we will still be able to provide these items for your child. These items will be brand new or sanitised and unused for 48 hours.

Finally, you should NOT bring your child to Better Tuition if you or any member of your household tests positive for COVID-19. Nor should you bring them if s/he has any of the following:

– a new, continuous cough;
– a high temperature or fever;
– loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste.

2020/21 has certainly provided us with some challenges but we can’t wait to get stuck in again and help children regain their focus on their studies, overcome any obstacles to their progress in school and get ready for any upcoming exams. If you would like to book a lesson online or in-centre, please call Paul Syrett or Christine McLaughlin now on 0161 748 3912.
