Libraries’ Week: A Celebration

library

Libraries’ Week is an annual celebration of all things ‘librarial’. As you know, these days libraries are not just about bookshelves lined with wonderful things to read. They are also meeting places, craft centres, digital focal points and therapy hubs. This week in Trafford’s libraries, you can improve your digital skills, paint with string, have a therapeutic hand massage and learn more about the ballads and songs of Peterloo.  Read about some of the events taking place in Trafford’s libraries during Libraries’ Week 2020.

This post, however, is concerned with books, specifically printed books – and the weird and wonderful places they find a home. Strange libraries are like mushrooms – they pop up in nooks and crannies, often unexpectedly. So it’s fitting that Kyoto’s Botanic Gardens is home to these beautiful mushroom libraries. It’s such a fun way to present books to children and I wish we had one on every street corner.mushroom library

Speaking of street corners, until the advent of mobile phone technology, the classic red telephone box was an everyday feature of our street furniture. These days, they are less common but some remain – and many have been repurposed as cute community libraries.

For example, in the village of Wesbury-sup-Mendip, the community rallied round when the mobile library service was cancelled. They created a book-lending hub in the village’s disused phone box. You can read more about this charming project here in the Guardian.

The Little Free Library proposes to place cute little book boxes like the one below in our parks and playgrounds. You can start your own Little Free Library: start here!

Sweden is a country that knows how to blend whimsy with practicality. Faced with the difficulty of bringing its mobile library service to the further reaches of the country, Sweden has responded with a number of bokbaten: floating libraries. What could be nicer than looking out over the sea as a boat full of bookish delights glides into view?

swedish floating library

We don’t all have the benefit of miniature mushroom libraries, phone box book-swapping centres or floating libraries – but we do have some great libraries in Trafford. Let’s make sure we use them – and frequently.

Autism Hour 2019

Autism Hour 2019 is organised by the National Autistic Society. Businesses across the country will be participating this week. This annual event encourages shops and services to provide a better experience for autistic people. Eden Square in Urmston will be running their Autism Hour today from 10 – 11 am.

Autistic people can be overwhelmed by loud noise, bright lights and intrusive odours. The bombardment of modern marketing techniques can lead to sensory overload and serious stress. Many autistic people avoid shopping for this reason. Autism Hour aims to change this.

During Autism Hour, businesses will be:

? Turning down music and other noise. Where possible, in-store speaker announcements and other controllable noise will be reduced if possible.
? Dimming the lights: bright lights can be overwhelming.
? Sharing information about autism with employees.

Better Tuition is an autism-friendly business; we work in a calm and quiet environment with minimal sensory intrusion. Our staff are trained to meet the needs of autistic children and adults. All students are welcome here and we hope that Autism Hour will help businesses consider long-term changes which will lead to a better experience for everyone.

Entrance Exams: How to Prepare During the Final Week

Is your child taking entrance exams in Trafford over the next couple of weeks?  Here are the questions we are most frequently asked during this crucial time.

entrance exams

Entrance exam season starts on 16th September in Trafford.

1. What sort of reward should I tell my child to expect if s/he passes?

None! Imagine being ten again: if your parents offered you a fantastic present such as a games console, or a holiday for passing your exams, and then you failed, you would not only have failed but you would also have missed out on something you really, really want. To a ten year old, that feels like punishment. Very few children will do any less than their very best in an exam, so rather than rewarding success, which is its own reward, you should consider a reward which will motivate your child to spend time preparing for the exams. The best rewards are simple ones like a trip to the park or the swimming pool, or a cake or staying up half an hour past bedtime at the weekend.  Reward effort not outcome!

2.  My child is really nervous: what can I do?

Nerves can be as big a barrier to exam success as not knowing the answer!  Talk your child through Better Tuition’s relaxation techniques: they are very simple and will really help your child before and during the exam.  They take five minutes to learn and previous students have used them to great effect.

3.  I feel really anxious as a parent: what can I do?

We really do sympathise with this one: since 2011, we have tutored hundreds of children through their grammar school entrance exams and we can assure you, you are not alone if you feel anxious as a parent!  First and foremost, you should try not to let your anxiety show, difficult though this is.  Secondly, try using our relaxation techniques yourself (they do work!).  Thirdly, it really is a good idea to avoid school gate discussion of practice test scores: unless your child is a genius this sort of thing can only make you more anxious (and if they are a genius, why are you anxious?).

4.  How should we be practising in the final couple of weeks?

Employ the maxim ‘less is more’ during the final couple of weeks before your child’s examination. A marathon runner does not prepare for a marathon by running 26 miles, so don’t risk fatiguing your child by making him/ her complete relentless practice papers. The best time for a final practice run is around one week before the date of the examination. After that, your child should be allowed to relax a little. You may complete a few SHORT timed tests over the week, go over corrections briefly or just stop practising entirely. You will need to judge carefully what is best for your child.

5.  It’s all turned into a drag: how can I put the fun back into entrance exam preparation?

An entrance exam party will put the fun back into entrance exam prep!

An entrance exam party will put the fun back into entrance exam prep!

The weekend before the exam, why not have an entrance exam party?
Get mostly adult family round to take part in entrance exam quizzes and compare scores. Designate a quiz maestro and mix up ‘on the buzzer’ rounds with timed tests (read out a maths problem and get them to hold up their answer after 90 seconds), photocopied sections of the practice tests, and Odd One Out rounds (NVR or VR is ideal for this). Your child’s confidence will soar as s/he observes the dismal performance of most adults on these tests.  The quizzes will give your child a good practice, but it won’t feel like work or pressure, and trust me, the adults will LOVE it! If you’re going to have an entrance exam party, don’t forget the party hats, jam sandwiches and fairy cakes, otherwise it’s not really a party!

Finally, entrance exam season can be an anxious time for everyone (even tutors!) but try to stay as calm as you can.  If you need help, advice or lessons, call Paul Syrett or Christine McLaughlin at Better Tuition on 0161 748 3912 or pop in to our office at1 Crofts Bank Road,Urmston,M41 0XH and see us.

Secondary School Open Evenings in and around Urmston and Stretford 2019

Open Evenings and Mornings are an opportunity to investigate which secondary school will be best for your child. If your child is in Year 5 or 6, you will probably already be thinking about this. Attending an open event will allow you to find out about the school’s results, pastoral care and extra-curricular activities. You will be able to chat to staff and current students, which helps to give you a feel for the place. Visiting a few schools can help you establish which ones have the right feel and that is why open evenings are so very useful.

Open Events offer the opportunity to get a feel for local secondary schools.

Open Events offer the opportunity to get a feel for local secondary schools.

In Trafford, we have a selective grammar school system (more information about entrance exams here). For various reasons, this means that many children travel outside the area for secondary school, so I have included schools which are commonly attended by children from Urmston and Stretford. N.B. The grammar schools tend to run their open evenings in the summer term, which is why there are no grammar school open evenings listed below.

Thursday, 12th September 2019, 6 – 8 pm & Friday, 13th September 2019, 4 – 6 pm: Blessed Thomas Holford

Wednesday, 18th September 2019, 4 – 7 pm: St Antony’s Catholic College

Wednesday, 25th September 2019, 5.45 – 8 pm: Wellacre Academy

Entrance Exam Maths Masterclass C: Algebra

Maths Masterclasses for entrance exams at Better Tuition Urmston

Can you produce an answer for the following questions in under thirty seconds? Answers at the bottom of the page.

(1) Solve for x:

x/3 + 9 = 17

a) 8 b)  16   c) 24   d) 28  e) 32

(2) Amy buys x bags of sweets every week and y packets of crisps every month. How many bags of sweets and packets of crisps will she buy in a year?

a) x + y b)  12x + 52 y   c) 7x + 31y   d) 52x + 12y  e) 4x + 12y

These are examples of the kind of calculations your child will have to carry out in grammar school entrance exams. Our Maths C Masterclass: Algebra will deepen your child’s understanding of algebra and help him/ her confidently solve equations and formulate algebraic expressions.

Algebra can be daunting for some children. Having spent years learning how to calculate with numbers, suddenly the numbers are taken away and replaced by letters. It’s no wonder that many children feel lost in a sea of x and y.

Our Maths C Masterclass: Algebra will cover the following areas:

§  What is algebra?

§  Solving equations

§  Writing and understanding algebraic expressions

§  Using algebra to solve number puzzles

§  Line graphs

§  The secrets of successful exam technique

§  Dealing with nerves

Children need to be able to solve simple equations for grammar school entrance exams. They will need to demonstrate that they can understand and identify algebraic expressions, as well as using algebra to solve number puzzles. Of all our masterclasses, our Maths C Masterclass: Algebra will broaden your child’s mathematical thinking most.

Our Maths C Masterclass: Algebra is suitable for children preparing to sit examinations in both GL Assessment and CEM format. It takes place on Thursday, 1st August from 1.30  – 4.30 pm and costs £50. This is a three-hour intensive session and places are limited to ten children. Advance booking is essential. Book and pay now by calling Paul Syrett or Christine McLaughlin on 0161 748 3912 or, if you prefer not to phone, please email us at info@bettertuition.co.uk. We expect to be fully booked, so please do not delay in booking.
