These are examples of the kind of calculations your child will have to carry out in grammar school entrance exams. Our Entrance Exam Maths Masterclass B: Number will help your child perform these calculations with ease.

Fractions, decimals and percentages present great difficulty for many children – and even adults. It is essential that children sitting grammar school entrance exams can perform calculations using numbers in these forms, as well as understanding how to compare a fraction with a percentage or a decimal number.

Our Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Double Maths Masterclass will help your child develop proficiency in calculating with:

§  Fractions

§  Decimals

§  Percentages

§  Understanding the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages.

§  Ratio and Proportion

§  The secrets of successful exam technique

§  Dealing with nerves

Many children struggle to understand how to simplify fractions or identify equivalent fractions. They may also have difficulty in calculating fractions of quantities. Similarly, many children have trouble in calculating percentages or working with decimal numbers. The ability to compare fractions with percentages and decimal numbers and to convert one to another (e.g. understanding that 4/5 = 80% = 0.8) is an essential skill for entrance exam success. Our Number Masterclass aims to give your child a solid understanding of these tricky numbers.

Our

Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Double Maths Masterclass is suitable for children preparing to sit examinations in both GL Assessment and CEM format.

Our masterclasses are a unique combination of extensive online video tutorials combined with paper-based workbook activities. Your child may complete their masterclass anywhere there is an internet connection (or you may download the tutorials and save them to your device) and at their own pace. The masterclass need not be completed all in one sitting and we recommend spreading it out over four or more days. This double masterclass will take a minimum of six hours to complete. Each masterclass costs £40. To book, please email us at info@bettertuition.co.uk.

1) Find the odd one out:

NVR PUZZLE FOR ENTRANCE EXAM MASTERCLASS AT BETTER TUITION URMSTON2) Which of the pictures below is a rotated image of the picture on the left?

NVR puzzle for entrance exam masterclass at Better Tuition Urmston

These are examples of the kind of questions your child will have to answer in grammar school entrance exams. Our NVR Masterclass A: Core Skills will cover the nine main types of NVR, explaining how to approach each question type.

NVR is based on visual puzzles (read more about NVR on here on our website). Many children – and their parents – feel intimidated by NVR for two main reasons. The first is that NVR is unfamiliar. Few schools will include NVR in their essential curriculum. Many parents have limited experience with NVR questions and therefore feel ill-equipped to support their children. If a child notices that their parent is nervous around NVR, they too will feel nervous – and this has a significant effect on entrance exam performance.

The second reason NVR intimidates is because of the time constraints. GL-style NVR allows just 30 seconds per question whilst CEM often allows even fewer. Everyone likes to be sure their answer is correct and we all teach our children to think carefully before answering a question – but NVR questions do not allow for too much consideration. They require confident and speedy application of knowledge and understanding – and our NVR Masterclass A: Core Skills will give your child an excellent grounding in these.

Our NVR Masterclass A: Core Skills will develop understanding and skills in the following areas:

  • reflection

  • rotation

  • codes

  • analogies

  • similarities

  • difference

  • 3D NVR

  • sequences

  • matrices

  • strategies for coping with practice exams

  • target setting for future study

February 2019 Half Term Activities in Manchester and the Surrounding Areas

February 2019 Half Term Activities in Manchester and the Surrounding Areas

It’s so important to plan fun activities over the half term break. With the weather being ‘unpredictable’ it’s all to easy to end up lolling around on the sofa most days, with the unfortunate result that we end up feeling we haven’t really had a break. February 2019 half term seems to have come around quickly. If you’re in Trafford, that’s probably because our borough is ahead of everyone else this year. Most Trafford schools are taking a break next week (9th – 17th February), whilst in Manchester and elsewhere, half term is running the following week (16th – 24th February). Very inconvenient for families with children who attend schools in different boroughs – but great if you prefer uncrowded spaces!

Nonetheless, there is plenty to do and see this February half term. I have put together a brief guide to what’s on offer, with an eye on the price (most activities are free) and the dates. Do please share on social media and please comment below if you are aware of any events you would like me to add to this post.

Chinese New Year

Photo of Red Paper Lanterns

There are plenty of Chinese New Year activities this February.

Chinese New Year is huge in Manchester: the dragon parade (Sunday 10th February, from 12.30pm at Albert Square), lion dance (Saturday 9th February, Market Street, various times) and street food market (7th – 10th Feb, St Ann’s Square) are all unmissable. At 6pm on 10th February, Chinatown will be lit up by a spectacular fireworks display. It’s all FREE (other than the street food market, of course).

Greater Manchester Police Museum

57a Newton Street, M1 1ET

Comprised of a 1879 police station, and 1895 courtroom, this Victorian gem is open on Tuesdays all year round, as well as on Thursday, 21st February 2019. Admission is FREE and the museum is suitable for all ages.

Science and Industry Museum

Liverpool Road, Manchester, M3 4FP

Admire the historic Stephenson’s Rocket at the oldest surviving passenger railway (until 8th September). Get switched on by the Electricity exhibition (until 28th April). Enjoy all the fun of the Victorian fairground (16th – 24th February). All activities are FREE, barring the fairground.

Focus Photography of Clear Light Bulb

Get switched on at the Museum of Science and Industry’s Electricity exhibition.

A World Inside a Book at Z-Arts
335 Stretford Road, Hulme, M15 5ZA

Suitable for ages 0 – 8, A World Inside a Book is an immersive exhibition which leads your little one through enchanted forests, mini towns watery worlds. If you have a fan of gruffalos, dragons and other magical creatures, book this wonderful experience without delay. Running from 12th – 20th February, A World Inside a Book costs £3 – £7.35.

Dunham Massey Winter Woollies Family Trail

FINCH FAMILY AT DUNHAM MASSEY

The finch family are trapped in the UK during winter!

Oh no! The Finch Family have missed their flight south and are stuck in England during the winter frost and snow. Can you help them find their winter woollies to try and help keep them warm? Keep an eye out for the birds tiny hats, scarves, jumpers and mittens which are lost amongst the trees and bushes as you explore the gardens. Spot some ‘Feathery Facts’ along the way to learn more about birds and their habitats. Pick up a trail from the garden kiosk. Complete the trail and collect a prize at the end!

This activity is FREE – and suitable for all ages. Do make sure you wrap up warm. 10.30 – 15.30 every day until 26th February.

Beyond Half Term

A break from school is a good time to take stock of your child’s progress at school. Is s/he meeting expected levels? Does s/he need to be pushed more? Are there any important tests or exams coming up during this school year (you can check this here)? Are you preparing for entrance exams in September (dates here)? You may be thinking about booking some tuition. Who better to choose than our team of qualified teachers at Better Tuition? Since April 2008 we have helped many hundreds of children achieve and succeed in school. Call Paul Syrett or Christine McLaughlin now on 0161 748 3912 to book your FREE assessment or FREE trial lesson. Try us: you will be amazed at the impact we make with just a few lessons.

Starting School – A Guide for Parents

Starting School: First Steps

Starting school is a big step in your child’s life and the process can be confusing for parents. How do you choose a school? How do you apply for a school place? What is the deadline for applying and when will you hear whether you have secured a place in the school of your choice? It’s so important to get everything right: the first few years of primary education are absolutely crucial and we all want our children to attend excellent schools with high standards and the ability to meet their individual needs.  Read on to find out everything you need to know about starting school.

Starting school is a big step.

Starting school is a big step.

When Should I Begin Preparing?

It makes sense to start looking at options at least a year before the application deadline (usually mid-January of the year in which your child will start school). This is because it takes time to research all the local schools and if you find that none of them are acceptable, you might even choose to move home. This can take several months, so it’s not an easy option.

When Will my Child be Eligible to Start School?

If your child was born between 1st September 2014 and 31st August 2015, s/he will be eligible to start school from 1st September 2019. If s/he was born between 1st September 2015 and 31st August 2016, s/he will be eligible to start school from 1st September 2020.

How Do I Research Local Schools?

It's important to research local schools very thoroughly - but where to start?

It’s important to research local schools very thoroughly – but where to start?

Firstly, you can find out the catchment areas of local schools by visiting your local authority website. If you live in Trafford, you can find this information here.

Friends whose children attend local schools are a great source of information, but you would be wise to do your own research over and above word-of-mouth recommendations. This is particularly the case if your child has any Special Educational Needs and/ or Disability (SEND). If you live in Trafford, you will find information about all the local primary schools in this information booklet from Trafford Council. In the booklet you will find links to each school’s website, which can be very informative.

You may also wish to read the Ofsted reports of schools on your shortlist. These will provide an assessment of the school’s academic levels as well as pastoral care and standards of behaviour. They will also evaluate standards of teaching and leadership. Don’t be put off if a school has been labelled as ‘needing improvement’ by Ofsted. When this happens, schools work extremely hard to ensure they address any problems flagged up by their inspection. You may also wish to look at Parent View – an Ofsted-run website which offers opinions on individual schools from parents of children who attend. Do bear in mind, however, that parents are more likely to post when they have a concern about the school, rather than when they want to offer praise.

Visiting Schools on Your Shortlist

It makes sense to pop along to open days and evenings, if you are able. Many schools are very accommodating and will allow you to make an appointment to show you round during the school day. Most schools run fundraising fetes at Christmas and in the summer, which are open to the public. This is an excellent opportunity to get a feel for the atmosphere in the school. You can normally find out about open events on schools’ websites but if you can’t see any listed, ring them to ask when these are scheduled.

Is my Child Eligible for a Place?

Most schools will accept your child provided you live in the catchment area. However, some schools are extremely popular and receive more applications than they have places. This is known as being oversubscribed. If this is the case, places are allocated on distance, so the nearer you live to the school, the more likely your child is to be offered a place.

Faith Schools

Faith schools operate catchment areas based on parishes. They may give priority to children who are baptised and/ or whose families attend church regularly. Other faith schools may simply ask you to sign to say you are supportive of the aims of the school. If your preferred school is a faith school, you should make sure you are able and willing to meet their admissions criteria. You will need to complete a Supplementary Information Form (available from the relevant school) and provide a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate.

How to Apply for a Primary School Place

You can normally apply for a primary school place from the autumn before your child will start school. The Local Authority will contact you to explain how to apply. The deadline for completing your application is in mid-January (in 2019 this is on 15th January). You may apply online or (in most areas) on paper.

You can list up to six schools in order of preference on your application form. It makes sense to choose more than one school. It is impossible to predict for certain whether you will be allocated a place at your preferred school, since it depends on so many criteria, such as birth rates.

When Will I Find Out Which School My Child Will Attend?

The Local Authority will contact you on ‘Offers Day’ in mid-April to offer your child a place at primary school. In 2019, offers will be made on 16th April and you will need to accept the place by 30th April. If you do not wish to accept the offer, you may wish to appeal. Full details of the appeals process will be included with your offer letter. Having said that, it’s worth taking a look at the school you have been allocated: it may be better than you assume.

I’ve Accepted the Offer: What Happens Next?

During the summer term, parents and children will be invited in to school. Most often, parents attend a ‘meet the teacher’ meeting and children are invited into school for the morning or afternoon. This gives them the chance to meet their new teacher and to get used to the classroom.

School will provide you with a list of items you will need. Make sure you order school uniform in advance. Get it all labelled with your child’s name, school and class. It is a good idea to try to get your child used to changing clothes without assistance. This will make their PE lessons go far more smoothly! It can be an anxious time for parents but try not to worry: most children love school and can’t wait to go back after the first day.

Whilst it is true that your child will cover most topics in school, s/he will undoubtedly benefit from extra practice in entrance exam maths.

The format of the maths test

This varies according to school. All information is correct at the time of writing.

1) CEM format

In Trafford this includes Altrincham Grammar School for Girls, Sale, Stretford and Urmston Grammar Schools. The CEM exam format mixes short sections of maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Short maths involves calculations designed to assess your child’s technical numeracy. Long maths involves multi-step word problems designed to assess your child’s understanding of maths, as well as technical ability. CEM generally follows a multiple choice format, with some open-ended questions. The answer grids can be tricky to grasp and it is essential that children have practice in filling them in. 2) GL Assessment format

In Trafford this includes Altrincham Grammar School for Boys. GL Assessment examinations are multiple choice. Children will answer questions on a range of topics, most (but not all) of which will be covered in school.

St Ambrose College sets its own entrance exam, which is broadly similar to GL Assessment format, with the addition of some open-ended questions.

2) Loreto

Loreto is a Catholic girls’ grammar school, which sets its own exam. Loreto’s maths exam is similar to a Key Stage 2 SATs reasoning paper. You can read more about these here on our website. Questions are open-ended (i.e. NOT multiple choice). At Better Tuition, we tailor our examinations to your target school, so we are able to offer a Loreto-style paper.

What is the required standard?

11 plus/ entrance exam maths exams are based on the maths your child has learned at school. As you would expect, a very high standard is demanded. The papers are extremely challenging and good reasoning skills are as important as the ability to carry out calculations.

Whilst it is important to cover topics such as probability, algebra and averages, core skills are the foundation of all maths learning. Your child must be able to perform the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) quickly and confidently. A sound knowledge of times tables is essential. Your child should be confident enough to work quickly under pressure and careful enough to answer accurately.

Number Skills in Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning

Perhaps unexpectedly, number skills are sometimes tested in the verbal and non-verbal reasoning parts of entrance exams/ 11 plus. Your child may be asked to complete a sequence, balance an equation or work out the relationship between numbers. In non-verbal reasoning, your child may be asked to complete a sequence (mainly GL Assessment).

How Practice Exams Help

A successful practice examination can be a real confidence boost, but a low score is arguably even more valuable. This is because you can very easily pinpoint areas of weakness. It’s not always about poor technical skills or understanding. Sometimes, children need to develop time management skills. Sometimes, children do not read the question carefully. A poor initial score can spark determination in your child to master 11 plus/ entrance exam maths.

We write our own papers, which closely mirror the ‘real’ exams. Marked papers are returned to you so that you can help your child with any errors s/he has made. Beware: many practice exam providers do not return papers to you and some even use photocopied CGP or GL papers, which your child may already have encountered.
