Anti-Bullying Week 2017: Gender and Bullying

This is the fourth post in a series to mark Anti-Bullying Week 2017.

The theme for Anti-Bullying Week 2017 is ‘All Different – All Equal’. Two topical stories have emerged which together highlight the need to identify and challenge bullying of transgender children. A transgender person, should you be unsure, is a person whose gender is not the same as the gender they were assigned at birth.

The Church of England yesterday issued guidance to all its schools on dealing with transgender pupils. The guidance –  Valuing All God’s Children –  specifically deals with the need to eradicate transphobic bullying. Secondly, a teacher named Joshua Sutcliffe has seemingly approached the press to announce he faces disciplinary action for misgendering a pupil http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-41966554.

The Church of England’s guidance advises that children should be able to ‘try out the many cloaks of identity’ and ‘explore the possibilities of who they might be without judgment or derision’. It further explains that ‘It is important to teach pupils to understand the appropriate use of gender labels and names for trans people and to explore why deliberately calling someone the gender other than that which they choose to identify as is a form of bullying.

According to the BBC, Joshua Sutcliffe – who is also a pastor at a Christian church – says, ‘While the suggestion that gender is fluid conflicts sharply with my Christian beliefs… I have never looked to impose my convictions on others’, he said. He said he had apologised to the student, but said he did not consider it ‘unreasonable’ to call someone a girl ‘if they were born a girl’. The school at which he is employed, unsurprisingly, said it would be ‘inappropriate to comment.

In the guidance, the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, warns that homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying causes ‘profound damage leading to higher levels of mental health disorders, self-harm, depression and suicide’. On the other hand, Joshua Sutcliffe complains that, ‘the suggestion that gender is fluid conflicts sharply with my Christian beliefs.’

I’m all for freedom of speech: after all, it is by discussing our views that we can become educated and enlightened. There are some places, however, where it would be quite wrong to express such an opinion – and one of those places is a school. Schools are havens for young people – a place to learn and develop into thoughtful, educated young adults; a welcoming community in which each student can play a meaningful role. A transgender young person should not have to confront any form of prejudice at school.

Gender is largely invented (did you know, for example, that the colour pink was once associated very strongly with masculinity?) and, as far as teaching young people goes, almost totally irrelevant. Why any teacher would consider it appropriate to make a judgement about a young person’s preferred pronoun is quite beyond me. Decent teachers know to leave their ego at the classroom door: children’s well being comes first.

If you are not transgender, it’s hard to understand what it must be like. It’s really difficult to imagine how it would feel. However, it’s not necessary to completely understand a condition in order to be respectful of it. If someone asks you to use a different pronoun when referring to them, just do it. It won’t do you any harm, will it? Remember: we are all the same – and all different.

Anti-Bullying Week 2017: Empowering Books

This post is the third in our series marking Anti-Bullying Week 2017.

Today we are focusing on books that will empower your child to beat the bullies. You may already know that Better Tuition has a mini lending library. Most of the books we are recommending come from there, so if you’d like to go ahead and read one, please ask at reception to browse our collection. We are aware that many of our blog readers come from far-flung parts of the globe, but we haven’t linked to an Amazon page as we recommend that you support your local independent bookshop (just down the road we have the excellent Urmston Bookshop). If you don’t have an independent bookshop locally, you can order online from the wonderful News from Nowhere.

You can browse a range of titles designed to help develop a growth mentality.

Jenny Alexander

Jenny Alexander’s books present simple solutions in an entertaining way . We like The 7-Day Bully Buster, Bullies Bigmouths and So-Called Friends and How to Be Happy. The books are short and easy to read and we have them available to borrow.

Gershen Kaufman

The title of Kaufman’s book –Stick up for Yourself: Every Kid’s Guide to Personal Power and Positive Self-Esteem – says it all. We have this in our mini lending library.

Brooks Gibbs

The intriguingly-named Brooks Gibbs is a big name in anti-bullying circles – visit our post on building resilience to see a clip of his work.  His book, Love Is Greater Than Hate, is a kind of anti-bullying manual which aims to put the victim in the driving seat.

Anti-Bullying Week 2017: Building Resilience

Resilience. This is the second post in our series marking Anti-Bullying Week 2017.

Resilience is an essential life skill.

Resilience is an essential life skill. Children have seldom been more protected from the evils of disease, exploitation and poverty but each new era brings fresh challenges. Today’s children are swamped with stress. From the school curriculum, which is increasingly challenging, to the need to navigate safely the ever-developing digital landscape, children have much to cope with.

Children learn very quickly that the world is full of difficult people. You know the kind I mean – the child who pinches them every day at nursery, the boy who decides they’re not allowed to join in and play football, the girl who calls them names. As parents, we cannot protect our children from these incidents and nor should we. If your child is never exposed to germs, they miss the chance to build immunity and are left vulnerable. In the same way, if they are never exposed to ‘difficult people’, they will never build resilience.

Anti-Bullying Week 2017

Anti-Bullying Week 2017

Strong self esteem is the foundation of resilience. You can’t bounce back if your ego is so fragile that even a pin prick will deflate you for hours. Don’t miss an opportunity to offer your child specific praise (but offer constructive criticism where it will benefit them).

Games are a great way to build resilience in your child. It’s very simple: don’t let them win every time. Games like Snakes & Ladders and Ludo are games of chance and not skill, so there is no reason to let your child win each time. Sports are fantastically resilience-building: all the most successful sports persons are no stranger to the disappointment of losing. Let your child get used to losing from time to time and you will have a child who understands that losing and being disappointed is just part of the game – and part of life.

Nobody likes to see their child unhappy. But whilst it’s not a cause for celebration, the day your child comes home and tells you someone was mean to them should be welcomed as an opportunity to help them build resilience. So whilst it’s not exactly a cause for celebration, the day your child comes home and tells you someone was mean to them should be welcomed because it marks an opportunity to help your child build resilience.

Brooks Gibbs is a youth worker and bullying expert. Watch the video below to see how he calmly and easily disarms a verbal bully.

It’s not easy to see your child deal with nasty behaviour but every knock and bump on life’s highway should serve to build resilience.

Anti-Bullying Week 2017

Next week and every week, we stand up against bullying. Coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance, Anti-Bullying Week 2017 takes place from 13th – 17th November. This year Anti-Bullying Week is celebrating what makes us all different because, after all, we are all different – and all equal.

With simple, inspired ideas such as Odd Socks Day (that’s almost every day in my house – matching socks are rare and purely coincidental), the charity aims to challenge the idea that we all need to be the same in order to fit in.

By its very nature, bullying is an isolating experience. When you are in its nasty grip, you feel you are the only one. Many victims of bullying feel they have brought it on themselves, that they somehow deserve the treatment they are receiving or that they are being over-sensitive. The simple fact is that if the way someone behaves towards you makes you feel scared, uncomfortable or miserable that isn’t okay and they are in the wrong – not you. If you feel you are the only one, ask the next five person you meet whether they have ever felt bullied. I’d bet that at least three out of the five will answer yes – even if they are adults.

Standing up for yourself can seem daunting but it doesn’t have to involve fighting back directly. If you are a child who feels bullied, please reach out and tell someone. You can tell a friend but remember that responsible adults such as parents, carers or teachers are ace at sorting these things out, so don’t feel shy about approaching them. If you do not feel that you can speak to anyone you know about your problem, you can call Childline on 0800 1111 or get in touch with them online. They will always be happy to help and they give really good advice. For further information about bullying in general and Anti-Bullying Week, visit:

https://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/

and

http://www.bullying.co.uk/

Getting involved in Anti-Bullying Week 2017 will show victims how much people care and encourage them to come forward and get the help they need. Remember that reaching out and telling someone what has been happening and how it makes you feel is where you begin to stand up for yourself. If you ask for help, you’ll be surprised by how much people care.

Year 5 Beginners’ Introductory Assessment

It would be fair to say that this time of year is a busy one for us. Many parents and carers choose the beginning of the new school year to begin tuition. Entrance exams for Trafford’s grammar schools are imminent and many parents of children in Year 5 are sensibly booking in to begin preparations a year in advance.

Choosing a Tutor

We know that it’s difficult to choose a tutor: there are many different services available and the price range is vast. You might like to compare more than one service; if so, download our tuition centre checklist so that you know exactly what to look for. Take some time to browse our website and get a feel for our service; take a look at our testimonials and check out our download store where you can download practice papers and resources, many of which are free. If you like what you see, why not book a place on our Year 5 Beginners’ Introductory Assessment?

Year 5 Beginners’ Introductory Assessment

This test, which is designed for children at the beginning of their entrance exam studies, will cover maths, comprehension, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. The test costs £20 and we shall provide each student who sits the test with four, £5 discount vouchers, to be used in four lessons at Better Tuition. This means that if you book the Year 5 Beginners’ Assessment plus four lessons, the introductory assessment is effectively free. Please note that the Beginners’ Assessment is very comprehensive and precludes the need for a further assessment before lessons are begun. Please click on the button on the right hand side of this page to book a practice entrance exam.

Booking Lessons

If you want to begin lessons after this, our team of qualified teachers will support you and your child all the way, but please do not delay as we do get very booked up. We are here to help: please call Paul or Christine on 0161 748 3912 to discuss your requirements.

If you book a lesson that you do not attend without contacting us, we will regretfully cancel any other summer school lessons you have booked and allocate them to students on our waiting list.
