But What, I Hear You Ask, Is a Fronted Adverbial?

Key Stage 2 SATs commence this week and this year’s tests have already proved so controversial that many parents have decided to boycott the them altogether by keeping their children off school.

What is a fronted adverbial?

What is a fronted adverbial? is a very popular question.

The main source of controversy is government intervention that has resulted in much harder Key Stage 2 SATs tests. The government says that making the national curriculum more difficult will deliver better educated children, whilst its opponents (teaching unions included) point out that you can’t make children more intelligent simply by giving them harder work to do.

A further point of debate is the content of the tests, including the many grammatical features children taking Key Stage 2 SATs tests are now expected to identify and name. These include subordinating connectives, modal verbs and the past progressive tense. MP for Brighton Pavilion, Caroline Lucas embarrassed David Cameron in the commons last week by asking him to define a few of these terms, which he declined to do, explaining that:

“The whole point of these changes is to make sure our children are better educated than we are.”

So there you have it. Our Eton-and-Oxford educated Prime Minister wants every child sitting Key Stage 2 SATs tests to achieve a greater vocabulary of grammatical terms than himself.

Now, I’m not proposing to criticise the Prime Minister for his lack of ability to explain subordinating conjunctives. Indeed, I don’t mind admitting that I’d never heard of some of the terms children taking Keys Stage 2 SATs tests are now expected to name and identify. Fronted adverbials, for example. If forced to have a stab at it, I’d guess that these are adverbs at the start of a sentence. But surely, I reasoned, that’s not a useful term for a ten or eleven year old child? With an intimidating name like that, fronted adverbials must be something altogether more complex. So I did what any sensible person would do. I asked my nine year old child.

Me:  What’s a fronted adverbial? Is it adverbs at the start of a sentence?

9 Year Old Child: Yeah.

So there you have it. A fronted adverbial is a word or words at the start of the sentence that describe what comes next.  Here are some examples (the fronted adverbials are in bold):

In the morning, she awoke with a headache.

Slowly and carefully, she climbed out of bed.

Without a thought, she dressed and prepared for the day ahead.

It can’t be easy being the parent of a child taking Key Stage 2 SATs this week. In my opinion, whether you’ve decided to keep your child away or send them into school, it’s a difficult decision and I’m certainly glad that I don’t have to make it for a couple of years. Don’t panic, though, if your child doesn’t know what an embedded clause is because a quick glance at my special teachers’ crystal ball reveals that in a few short years, it will be decided that much of this terminology is an unhelpful barrier to learning and understanding and the grammar project will be abandoned and/ or altered significantly. Undoubtedly and inevitably, fronted adverbials will not feature for long in the National Curriculum.

If you do need to know your modals from your metaphors (for helping with homework, preparing for Prime Ministers Questions, bored on a Saturday night …), however, there is a good glossary of terms on the School Run website.

New Arrangements for Entrance Exams in September 2016 – CEM Format

UPDATE: October 2022 There is a disctinct possibility that there will be a change of format in 2023. We will update this page when more information is available.

There is a new consortium arrangement between four of Trafford’s grammar schools: Urmston Grammar, Sale Grammar, Altrincham Grammar School for Girls and Stretford Grammar have joined together to provide one CEM format exam for students in Year 6 from September 2016.

The Trafford Grammar Schools CEM Consortium Entrance Test (TGSCC) will take place on 12th September 2016.

All aboard the CEM Format express!

All aboard the CEM Format express!

What’s the difference?

Previously, each school has set its own entrance examination, using GL Assessment as a provider. Children had to sit an examination for each school, in order to be considered for entry in Year 7.

Now, children will sit only one examination for all four schools. There has been a change of provider and of exam format: Durham University will be providing a CEM format examination. The exam will consist of two papers, each taking around an hour to administer.

But I’ve been preparing my child for GL Assessment format!

Don’t worry about this: even if this announcement has taken you by surprise, the broad skills demanded by GL Assessment are not altogether dissimilar to those demanded by the CEM format. The one notable difference between GL and CEM is that CEM is thought to focus more on vocabulary than GL Assessment.

So what are the main features of CEM format?

CEM format entrance examinations cover maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. They often include a reading comprehension passage. There are a lot of questions to complete in a short space of time. Each paper will cover a combination of skill areas; for example there may be maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning all in one paper.

What should I do now?

Visit your chosen schools’ website to familiarise yourself and your child with the materials provided and to register for the exam (you have to do this by June; don’t put it off!).

There are no ‘official’ CEM papers available but various publishers provide practice workbooks and exam papers, so you might want to get some of these. We’d recommend the CGP publications.

You may want to book a practice test: Better Tuition runs these every year and, because we keep our ear to the ground, we are prepared for the change in format and have CEM format exam papers ready for this year’s exams.  Although the CEM does not make practice or past papers available, our papers are based on wide-ranging research. Our next exam is on Sunday, 24th April 2016 at 9.30am.  We are still able to offer GL Assessment format. Find out more about our practice entrance exams.

There is a useful FAQ section on Stretford Grammar’s website.

Above all, do not panic: the children are all in the same boat so nobody is disadvantaged by this change. I believe that this change will reduce the stress involved in entrance exams.  It’s not pleasant to spend five Saturdays pushing your brain to its limits in exam after exam, which is how it used to be for hundreds of ten and eleven year olds every September. This shorter exam format and the consortium arrangement will take up far less time and produce less angst – which can only be a good thing.

Better Tuition Word Power Vocabulary workbook 11692510_909383589132323_8620702613854196755_n 11101009_909383545798994_1052485046870944106_n 11033127_909383532465662_3112124097840302923_n 11709816_909383435799005_4208105967663625450_nWe have two workbooks available from our Urmston Tuition Centre. The workbooks are suitable for older Key Stage 2 children (Years 5/6) and cost just £5 each.

The Better Tuition Word Power Vocabulary workbook aims to boost your child’s vocabulary via a variety of exercises (sets, synonyms, anonyms and scrambled sentences). There are 45 pages of activities together with a vocabulary list, full answers and advice for improving vocabulary. We were inspired to put the workbook together by the Durham CEM-style entrance exams adopted by Sale Grammar and Altrincham Grammar School for GIrls, but the exercises would benefit any child who needs to improve their word stock.

Better Tuition Finding and Correcting Spelling and Punctuation Errors workbook

The Better Tuition Finding and Correcting Punctuation and Spelling Errors workbook offers 25 spelling tests and 25 punctuation tests in which children must find and correct errors. Full answers are also provided. Proof reading is a valuable skill for us all but this workbook was inspired by the need to help children who are preparing for grammar school entrance exams (11+) or Key Stage 2 SATs.

Both workbooks are just right for practice over the long summer break – they offer worthwhile activities that don’t take up too much time.

You can purchase the workbooks by calling into our Urmston tuition centre at 1 Crofts Bank Road, Urmston, M41 0TZ. We are open this Saturday (25th July) until 12 noon. During the last week of July and throughout August we are open on Tuesdays and Wednesdays between 9 am and 12 noon and between 4 pm and 7 pm. We cannot currently sell them online, nor can we post them out over the summer.

Happy New Year from Better Tuition, Urmston’s Independent Tuition Centre

We didn’t send our customers Christmas cards this year.  There were a few reasons for this.  Firstly, we have a lot of customers (past and present customers would run into the thousands) and it would take a long time to write a card to each of them.  We’re not crazy about those professionally printed cards sent out by dentists or solicitors, complete with company logo.  That just feels like a piece of marketing material, and no one really wants an advert adorning their mantlepiece.  Then there is the use of the earth’s resources in order to make the cards: cardstock, printing inks and glitter all have to come from somewhere, you know.  We really try to keep our environmental footprint as small as possible.

We do send cards to family and close friends, but we decided we could do something more meaningful with the money we might otherwise spend on Christmas cards for our customers.  We considered whether we might give our students a little treat, such as a selection box or similar but we really felt that a) children are overwhelmed with treats at this time of year; b) not everyone celebrates Christmas and yet it’s everywhere in December – perhaps it’s not appropriate for Better Tuition to join in with this, and c) we really feel that our lessons are such a treat that anything extra would be entirely superfluous!

Nevertheless, we decided that we really wanted to thank our customers: you are wonderful people and without your support (and your word-of-mouth recommendations), Better Tuition wouldn’t exist.  We are very lucky to teach such lovely, hardworking children. They always make us smile.  With this in mind it wasn’t hard to find a place for our donation.  Smile Train offers corrective surgery to children in developing countries suffering from cleft palates.  Without surgery, these children cannot smile, leading to shame and social isolation as well as speech impairments, so Smile Train literally puts a smile on children’s faces.

Happy New Year from all the team at Better Tuition.

Happy New Year from all the team at Better Tuition.

Better Tuition has made a donation of £150 to Smile Train as a way of marking this fresh new year and of wishing our customers, past and present, a Happy New Year and wonderful things for 2015.  Keep smiling, and we’ll see some of you next week, as our spring term begins on Monday, 5th January.  You can find out how to get involved with Smile Train here on their website.
