Years 1 – 2
Literacy is the foundation of all education and if a child grows up with a love of reading and writing, they also grow up with a love of learning. Explore stories and books with your child. Don’t worry too much if s/he seems to find it difficult to pick up reading and writing. Many children aren’t ready for this until they are seven or even eight years old.
Year 2 children will be sitting Key Stage 1 SATs during the month of May. Most schools prefer not to give a definite date for this, to avoid putting pressure on the young children. More information about Key Stage 1 SATs.
Recommended website http://www.starfall.com/ This website has some great resources for early readers. The activities are full of fun and the site is visually engaging.
Years 3 – 6
Your child will be developing as a reader and writer. During this time, it’s important to support and encourage your child in reading and writing. Keep sharing stories and books. We recommend buying your child a simple notebook so that s/he can keep a diary or write stories. This approach works particularly well if the notebook is completely private. It really helps your child develop confidence in writing if s/he can practise without the pressure of being judged, no matter how positive you are as a parent. Remember that constant praise can sometimes feel like pressure to a child!
If you live in Trafford, you may decide to enter your child for grammar school entrance exams at the start of Year 6. To achieve the best possible chance of success, your child will need an excellent, wide vocabulary (read our advice on how to develop vocabulary) and, for the comprehension element of the exam, excellent skills in inference and deduction.
