Chunking for long division
We have been looking at using chunking for long division in some of our lessons. It’s an easy method to use once you get the hang of it, so I have put together this little guide, with activities for you to complete.
When to use chunking
It’s best to use chunking when dividing by two (or more) digits. For example, when dividing 435 by 23. If you are dividing by one digit (for example 435 ÷ 7), it’s best to use short division. However, for our introduction to chunking, we will learn how to use chunking to divide by one digit.
Introduction to chunking
Watch this five-minute video to learn the method of chunking to divide two digits by one digit.
Now find the answers to the following calculations by using chunking:
1) 54 ÷ 3 2) 68 ÷ 4 3) 91 ÷ 7 4) 189 ÷ 9 5) 84 ÷ 6

Remember that if you prefer to use a different method, that’s fine. As long as you get the right answer (and it doesn’t take too long to arrive at it), you can use any method you like. Sometimes it’s good to know more than one method so that you can switch between them.
